Orthodontic Emergencies in Clawson MI

LIVE LIFE SMILING

We’re Here to Help with Orthodontic Emergencies

At Clawson Orthodontics, we understand that emergencies can happen. While we strive to make your orthodontic journey as smooth as possible, occasional mishaps may occur. True orthodontic emergencies are rare, but when they do happen, we’re here to assist you! Below are some common situations and tips to manage them until you can reach us.

Common Orthodontic Emergencies

Loose or Completely Removed Bracket:

If you have a loose or completely removed bracket, you can use orthodontic wax to cover the area and prevent irritation. If your gums feel irritated, rinsing with warm salt water can help ease the discomfort. This situation often does not require an immediate visit to our office and can usually be managed at home. However, if you are experiencing pain, please contact our office at (248) 435-2000 and we’ll find a solution together.

Poking Wire:

For a poking wire, orthodontic wax can again provide relief by covering the area causing discomfort. Ensure the area is dry before applying the wax to make it stick more effectively. If the wire has shifted, you may use tweezers to gently guide it back to its proper position. If the issue continues or causes significant discomfort, please contact our office for further assistance.

Missing clear aligner attachment:

If you experience a missing clear aligner attachment, there’s no need to panic. This can typically be resolved during your next visit. However, if multiple attachments are missing, call our office to discuss the best course of action.

More Serious Situations

Trauma:

In cases of trauma, if it’s a medical emergency, you should call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately. If the trauma involves your teeth, contact both your general dentist and Dr. Richard Bruno for further evaluation. Braces or aligners often provide protection during trauma by holding your teeth in place, reducing the risk of further damage.

Missing/Broken Retainer:

If your retainer is missing or broken, please call our office to schedule an appointment for a replacement. At the end of your treatment, you will receive a 3D-printed model of your teeth, so be sure to keep this safe—it can be used to fabricate a new retainer. The longer you go without a retainer, the more likely your teeth are to shift. To prevent any undesired movement, contact us right away if your retainer is lost or broken.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a true orthodontic emergency?2026-06-04T13:42:03+00:00

True emergencies involve severe, unmanageable pain, facial trauma, or an appliance piece directly interfering with swallowing or breathing. Loose brackets or slightly poking wires from your braces are inconvenient but can usually be temporarily managed with orthodontic wax until our team can schedule a repair visit.

What should I do if a piece of my appliance or clear aligner breaks over the weekend?2026-06-04T13:42:27+00:00

If a bracket becomes loose but is still attached to the wire, apply a small ball of orthodontic wax to keep it steady. If you damage or lose a tray from your clear aligners system, switch back to your previous tray to prevent your teeth from shifting, and call our office on Monday morning.

How do I handle a long, poking wire at home?2026-06-04T13:42:47+00:00

If an archwire is irritating your cheek, try using the eraser end of a pencil to gently push the wire flat against the tooth. If it won’t move, cover the sharp tip completely with a generous piece of orthodontic relief wax and contact us to clip it cleanly.

What should I do if my child breaks an appliance during early treatment?2026-06-04T13:43:14+00:00

If an appliance from our early orthodontics program becomes loose or bent, stop turning any expanders immediately. Call our office so we can guide you on whether an immediate visit is required to prevent irritation to their gums or palate.

Do I need to make an appointment for an emergency repair, or can I just walk in?2026-06-04T13:43:32+00:00

We strongly recommend calling our office before heading over so we can prepare a chair for you. This allows us to adjust our daily schedule, minimize your wait time, and get you comfortable and out of pain as quickly and safely as possible!
